Located on the eastern side of the city, the market’s name is a result of a linguistic transformation introduced by the Ottomans who substituted the Arabic letter ‘ḍād’ with the Turkish letter ‘ẓā’. The original name of the market was ‘Sūq al-Ḍarb’, meaning ‘The Market of the Mint’, as it was where metallic currency was minted during the Mamluk era and before. Over time, the expression ‘Sūq al-Ẓarb’ evolved into the current ‘Sūq al-Zarb’.
Comprising 71 shops, the market primarily caters to the needs of Bedouins, offering a variety of textiles. Its ceiling is adorned with a barrel vault punctuated by skylights, casting an ethereal glow upon the bustling marketplace.
