Welcome To
Mashrou By Default
A budding art project aimed at revitalizing the art scene in the city of Aleppo and providing young artists with the opportunity to showcase their ideas and connect with the public in this space. In addition, the project offers an art residency that brings together participating artists under the supervision of experts to elevate the standard of art within the city and present artworks that befit the city of Aleppo and its community. The project will culminate in art exhibitions that encompass all forms of art (painting, sculpture, photography, installation art, etc.), serving as a distinguished conclusion to these residencies.
About us
“Mashrou By Default Project” is an emerging art initiative founded in 2023 in the city of Aleppo. The project aims to create a creative artistic space in the city by providing artistic and cultural spaces for the community and restoring the city to its former glory. It seeks to revive art by supporting and developing young artistic talents, aiming to create a cultural and economic product that benefits both the community and the artists.
Our Exhibitions
Timeline
The project team has dubbed this year 'The Year of Discovery' as it marks the project's inaugural foray into exploring artistic talents in Aleppo, through two exhibitions and the city's first art residency.
Lamet Fan
Our project kicked off with the "Lamet Fan" art exhibition, featuring nearly 14 artists who displayed a wide range of artistic expressions, including sculptures, paintings, and installations. The two-day event, held on May 9th and 10th, was a huge success, drawing in about 250 visitors.
1st Art Residency
The project launched the first city-wide art residency in Aleppo. This residency involves a group of artists working together in a shared art space to create a multidisciplinary artistic environment under the guidance of a curator. The outcomes of the residency, in the form of artworks, typically culminate in an art exhibition held immediately following the residency.
Before "8000"
Exhibition aimed to raise awareness about the significance of Aleppo's tangible and intangible heritage. Around 15 artists presented various artworks inspired by the ancient gates of Aleppo. Held from October 2nd to 5th, the exhibition attracted 1000 visitors. This exhibition was the culmination of the project's first art residency, launched the previous month.
Following the exploratory year of 2023, the project plans to expand its reach and work on broadening the target audience and the technical foundation built last year. Additionally, there will be an expansion in the types of art presented and exhibitions held. Therefore, the team has named this year 'The Year of Expansion'
2nd Art Residency
In preparation for the first exhibition in 2024, the project launched the second edition of its artist residency program with a group of young artists. This residency distinguished itself from the first edition by focusing on the artists' abilities to present their work during the exhibition.
Gen Z
The project organized the 'Gen Z' exhibition with the aim of evoking a range of positive emotions in visitors, such as happiness, joy, and security. Approximately 14 artists who had previously participated in the February residency showcased their work at the exhibition. Held from March 1st to 4th, the exhibition attracted an average of 100 visitors per day.
3rd Art Residency
The project launched its third artist residency in preparation for the second exhibition in 2024. This edition of the residency was distinguished by a series of dialogue sessions aimed at enriching the participating artists' artistic knowledge
